11/10/08 - Team Captains Chosen for 2009

 

The IUP baseball team has selected Sean Foor, Corey Betz, Colby Betz, and Shane Melhorn to join Ryan Mostyn as team captains for the 2009 baseball season.

 

"Our team has selected five captains who represent our baseball program and university with class," said IUP head coach Jeff Ditch.  "Each has the work ethic and team-first attitude that will make a difference in 2009.  I am excited to see leadership qualities appear with many members of our team and each of these players are star leaders."

 

Mostyn is a returning captain from 2008.  He is a senior from Philipsburg, PA, studying business finance.  He was named a PSAC Top Ten Scholar Athlete, Dean's List member, and is a “WINwithCLASS” academic captain. Mostyn has played in 124 games his first three seasons at both shortstop and second base, and has driven in 63 runs.

 

Foor is a senior from Everett, PA.  He is a Criminology major who has been named to the Dean's List and is a “WINwithCLASS” academic captain.  He has appeared in 88 games the past three years as a regular in right field and hit .274.

 

Corey Betz is a junior from Dillsburg, PA, and a 2006 graduate of Northern York High School. He is a Safety Science major.  In two seasons, he as made 27 appearances out of the bull pen as IUP's closer, earning with five wins and seven saves.  In 2008 he was named a PSAC West All-Star.

 

Colby Betz is also a junior from Dillsburg, PA, and the twin brother of Corey.  He is a Safety Science major.  He was named 1st team PSAC All-West last and All-North Atlantic Region in 2008.  Betz was 7-1, including 5-0 in PSAC action, with a 2.93 ERA on the mound.  In two seasons, he has won 11 games and pitched 10 complete games.

 

Melhorn is a senior studying Business Technology and is a member of the IUP Dean's List.  He came to IUP after a stellar two year career at Potomac State.  Last year he hit .283 with six home runs, 10 doubles, 35 RBI's and 49 runs scored as the starting centerfielder.  He is from Dover, PA.

 

The team is currently participating in off-season skill instruction, lifting, conditioning, and speed drills until semester finals in December.  The 2009 season opens February 28, 2009 in Murfreesboro, NC, versus Chowan University.
