12/15/06 - Duda and Snyder Recognized as IUP’s Chacivity Award Winners

IUP’s Office of Student Conduct (OSC) and Theo Turner, Coordinator Center for Student Life/Student Conduct, has announced two baseball players as 2006 fall semester Chacivity Award winners.  Senior Matt Duda and junior Dan Snyder were recognized by the OSC after being nominated this past fall semester.  The award will be received at a reception in April.

The Chacivity Award (Chacivity = Character, Civility, and Integrity) is designed to recognize those students who exhibit behavior that is uplifting to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania community.  He or she must display courage, civility, leadership, integrity, and initiative.

Snyder is currently a junior at IUP studying Safety Science.  As part of his safety science major, he is a professional student member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).  The local chapter provides opportunities to attend career workshops and professional development.  He also helps the local chapter with their blood drive.  Dan is also the recipient of the National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National Smart Grant) and maintains 3.45 GPA.  He has been chosen to internship with Connoco Phillips in Anchorage Alaska for the summer of 2007.

As a member of the IUP Baseball team, Dan was recently voted a team captain and is also a team captain for the team's "WINwithCLASS" academic program.  He is a member of the 2006-2007 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as directed by Associate Director of Athletics Fran Nee.  He is an active volunteer in the IUP Baseball youth camps, United Way, America's Walk for Diabetes, and First Commonwealth Christmas/Jimmy Stewart Parade.   He was recognized by the PSAC as a Scholar Athlete for the 2005-2006 season.

Duda is currently a senior at IUP studying to be an athletic trainer.  He spends a great deal of time working with his assigned athletic teams at IUP and also doing athletic training coverage at the Indiana High School.  Student athletic trainers are required a great deal of hands-on training and serve an important role for the entire athletic department as they are assigned to each certified athletic trainer and clinical instructor at both IUP and IHS. Matt is also a volunteer firefighter for the Cranesville Fire Department / First Aid & CPR and rescue unit.

As a member of the IUP baseball team, Matt is a three year letter winner.  He is an active volunteer in the IUP Baseball youth camps, United Way, and America's Walk for Diabetes.  At this time, he is considering a red-shirt this year so he can continue to serve as a student athletic trainer and still play baseball his fifth year at IUP (2007-08).

The Office of Student Conduct, directed by Kate Linder, supports the academic mission of the university by promoting the development of a campus community characterized by reasonable safety and security, responsible behavior, civility, and respect.  Through enforcement of university policies and regulations, the office challenges students to take responsibility for their actions, demonstrate respect for themselves, property, other individuals, and develops skills that will enhance lifelong problem solving, communication, and decision-making abilities.
